COUNTY CORK venue is fast gaining a reputation as one of Ireland's
stiffist golf challenges, the course itself is a PAR 72, 6650
yards long links course and rises hundreds of feet above dramatic
cliffs, surrounded by sea on all sides. Located about 30 minutes
drive from Cork International Airport and Cork City.
Surprisingly
only open since June 1997 this is probably the most spectacular
Golf Course in Ireland, if not the World. Set in over 220
acres on a coastal peninsular this par 72, - 7,100 yard championship
course is breathtaking. The course is set out in two loops
of nine holes (which was always the tradition in links golf),
Eight of the magnificent holes border the cliff top and will
provide you with some unexpected views of the Atlantic coastline,
especially if you tend to Slice or Hook the ball !
According
to Joe Carr, one of the designers and 3 times British Amateur
Champion: "The Old Head of Kinsale, as a golf links,
will in my estimation rate with the great golf courses in
the world. Its location, its scenic reality and spectacular
terrain remind me of Cypress Point and Pebble Beach, two of
America's most famous courses. To be associated with the design
of this project is to me the thrill of a lifetime. I see The
Old Head as a golfers paradise and it has the potential of
being the eight wonder of the world, in golfing terms."
Although
expensive to play at around £200 IR per round this is one
of the truly spectacular courses and views you will ever get.
Another unusual feature is the amount of Tee's on the course,
about 7 on each hole, which are changed daily to account for
the playing conditions and winds. Effectively you could play
a different course each day of the week here !.
Fast
true greens and tough rough feature here. The fairways are
fast and somewhat tricky to land on in the summer months.
Although this shortens the course the prevailing winds more
than make up for any advantage hard ground may give you in
terms of distance.
Altogether
a pleasure to play and a friendly course to wine and dine
in. The views from the wonderful clubhouse are exceptional.
We thoroughly recommend it to all.
