SHANNON REGION - Mountshannon - Scarriff - Williamstown
Shannon Menu
Mountshannon is a pretty one-street village with a good harbour on Lough Derg; this makes it hugely popular with boating people during the summer months. A winner of the Tidy Towns award, this scenic village is a perfect location to explore Lough Derg. The hotel and pubs provide excellent traditional music, with superb cuisine. Holy Island and remains of churchesand round tower was destroyed by the Vikings, you may visit the island from here by the East Clare Heritage launch and it is well worth a visit. Mountshannon is also a shooting and fishing centre.

Scarriff is Lough Dergs most westerly port on the entire Shannon navagation system and is a very popular place for both visitors and locals alike. It is a pleasant market town built on a hill, the town square (now a car park) occupies the crest of the hill, so that every road into the town is uphill. The Scariff River is an attraction for anglers, and the river, which flows into the Shannon is navigable for river cruisers almost to the town.

Williamstown is situated two miles from the village of Whitegate in Co. Clare. This area is known as a 'townland' rather than a village, as the nearest shops and pubs are in Whitegate, but some say this adds to the charm of the place. The area is steeped in history - Williamstown was once home to the 'Williamstown Hotel', a grand country home built in the 1750's. The stables have been converted and are now inhabited, but the remains of the castellated wall is a testament to the grandeur of the building that used to exist. There is a 300 year old Monterey Cedar here which adds special character to the harbour and grounds. There is a castellated pier coming out of the harbour which was in fact the starting point for many who emigrated during the 1840's famine. People would connect here with a steam ship which would bring them as far as Limerick and then on to New York
