SHANNON REGION - Killaloe - Limerick
Shannon Menu
Killaloe is the southernmost town on Lough Derg and is steeped in history, it is the home of Brian Boru, Ireland's heroic High King (1002-1014) who routed the Vikings from Ireland. Here he was born and reared, and here stood his palace of Kincora. In mid-July each year the village of Killaloe celebrates "Feile Brian Boru" - a weekend of partying with music, song, dance, and local competitions. Always well attended and supported if your visit coincides with this time make sure you attend. Killaloe Music Festival has become one of the highlights of the Irish classical music calendar which is hosted annually in July by the Irish Chamber Orchestra.
Taking place within the historic walls of St Flannan's Cathedral (built between 1185 and 1225), the festival is an extended weekend of wonderful music-making by the Irish Chamber Orchestra and the most celebrated international conductors and musicians.

Killaloe is separated from its 'twin' town of Ballina by a bridge over the Shannon. It is the centre of a beautiful and historic district - a land of legend and story, endowed by nature with a beauty unsurpassed along the Shannon basin. Killaloe is unique in having two little oratories, built about three centuries apart. The gradual development of the art of arched roofing can be traced through a study of these. In the 12th century Killaloe emerged as the ecclesiastical centre of the newly formed diocese of the same name

Limerick City can boast a history which dates back over 800 years, throughout this time the City has seen many changes. The magnificent King Johns Castle which dominates the riverside was built in 1210 by King John and is definately not be missed. This huge fortification was restored and excavated considerably over the years and the result is a magnificent structure indeed. The castle is located at the mouth of the River Shannon and held prime position for the cities defence over the centuries. Some features of the castle today include, excavated pre-Norman houses, fortifications, and seige mines and tower and battlement walkways. There is a wealth of information on Audio visual and on display relating to Limericks History form the cities foundation to the present day.
