 Terryglass
and Ballinderry and
the surrounding areas lie on the Tipperary side of Lough Derg
and have a very different appeal compared to Athlone
and the mid Shannon area. The small villages are beautifully
maintained and offer plenty for you to see and enjoy.
Terryglass is a charming village which has won numerous tidy
towns awards and is very popular with local boaters. The harbour
at Terryglass is quite small and lends itself to a friendly,
sociable atmosphere. A short walk up the hill will bring you
to the village itself which has a craft centre, shop and two
pubs - which are both renowned for good food, music and craic.
Terryglass is the site of a 6th century monastic settlement,
of which only a small part remains, but the area is very historic.
There are some beautiful craft shops and local food shops in
this area, so be sure to allow extra shopping time on your trip.
Kilgarvan, is primarily a quay side pretty village with a beautiful
restaurant which is popular with locals and visitors alike.
During the summer you will find a great atmosphere around the
pubs with traditional music and great food. This area is an
enjoyable drive or cycle especially during the summer when you
will be surprised at how many people have discovered its unspoilt
beauty.
