Shannon
Menu |
The mid-Shannon Region is a place of discreet beauty and is
steeped in a rich history that has seen many changes throughout
the centuries. Athlone
is the principal town of the region and its main feature is
the13th century castle at the edge of the River Shannon in the
centre of the town. No doubt you will pass through or near Athlone
if you are travelling to either Dublin or Galway in the West
of Ireland. Athlone is well worth a stop in your journey.
The region stretching from Athlone to the south towards Portumna
has many ruins and monastic settlements to remind us of our
past, none more so than Clonmacnoise.
The mid -Shannon region and its many towns dotted along the
way all combine to produce a rich sense of pride in heritage
and community. You will find plenty to enjoy whether you are
energetic, walkiing, cycling or a multitude of watersports,
or if you prefer to relax on a cruiser along the mighty Shannon.
Take time out to enjoy the many pubs, restaurants, craft shops
and much more that you will find on your stay.
