|
Lough Derg is the largest
lake on the Shannon Navagation system stretching 10 miles
wide and 25 miles long and comprising 95 miles of a beautiful
scenic drive. Lough Derg borders three counties along
its journey, Clare, Tipperary and Galway so you will be
spoiled for choice with pubs to visit, interesting places
to see and lots of watersports and activitiets to enjoy.
Lough Derg is very much a lake of myth and history. Its shores
have been settled since prehistoric times.and its channel has
been part of one of Ireland's oldest routes. In early medieval
times hermits, heroes, soldiers, raiders, students and pilgrims,
all travelled along this route from the Atlantic ocean to the
Irish midlands. Today, you can drive around the Lough Derg Drive
like the explorers of the past.
Lough Derg Drive:
The Lough Derg Drive is a very well signposted circut of the
entire Lough Derg area. The most popular starting point is at
Killaloe ,
just
13 miles north-east of Limerick
or from Portumna
to the upper part of the Lake. The drive will take you through
many towns and lakeside villages with great pubs, beautiful
craft shops, interesting castles, parks and gardens and many
beautiful picturesque viewing points. The average time to complete
the drive is three hours but if you have plenty of time you
should try to take a boat out on the lake or stretch your legs
and take a walk or hike through the surrounding woods. You will
pass many beautiful villages on your trip around the Lough Derg
area, including, Portumna,
Dromineer, Nenagh
and Terryglass. Many are
hidden away and are off the beaten track, but you will always
find welcome hospitality, great food and plenty to see and do
and lots of great photographic opportunities.
