SHANNON REGION - Dromineer - Nenagh
Shannon Menu
Dromineer is a small country village on the shores of Lough Derg and is well worth a visit. During the summer months the marina and the local bars and hotels become very popular with both the boating crowd and locals alike. There is also a small beach which is used by local children on the fine summer days

As a Marina this is a popular stopping off point for those touring the Shannon and also for Irish boating enthusiasts who moor their boats here year round due to the excellent shelter the harbour provides. The whole area is steeped in history and many ruins of once great castles and lodges are dotted around the countryside. Lough Derg is home to one of the Oldest Yacht Clubs in the World and is famous for its Pike and Bream fishing, Dromineer is a very popular fishing and watersports location in Ireland. You will often see the dedicated anglers out early morning and late night and the sunsets over the lake provide excellent photographic opportunities.

The town of Nenagh is the main town of County Tipperary and is surrounded by the beautiful small towns such as Dromineer and Garrykennedy . There is plenty to see and do here, theatre, arts, music, song and dance or you can also trace your ancestors in the heritage centre. The Heritage Centre is located in two buildings of North Tipperary's former County Gaol (prison), which date to the 1840s. The displays in the gaol and Governor's House relate to folk life, the environment and prison life. 'Hands-on' is encouraged in the recreated shop, school-room, forge and dairy. There are 3-D models of the gaol complex, Lough Derg on the River Shannon and of the lakeside villages of Dromineer and Garrykennedy.

Several art and photographic exhibitions are held throughout the year at small galleries in the town and also at the Heritage Centre which are well worth checking out. Nenagh boasts one of the oldest amateur groups in the country, and several plays are held throughout the year aswell as having visiting acts. Friday is market day in Nenagh and from 11am you will find this a good place to buy home-made and home-grown produce and lots more until 1pm. Nenagh Castle and Franciscan Abbey are also well worth a visit if you are travelling in the area.

The history of Garrykennedy dates back to the Norman era, when the village was the stronghold of the O’Kennedys. The ruins of their castle on the lake shore remains the centerpiece of the village today. Garrykennedy has a tiny harbour, and there is a lovely atmosphere, you will see the many cruisers mooring up against the high stone walls, with the ruins of a castle standing guard over visiting boats.

Both children and adults will enjoy a walk in the Woodland Park. The main streeet is tiny and offers two pubs and restaurants famous for their traditional music and good food. Enjoy relaxing lakeside forest walks, boating, fishing, sailing, and outdoor activities.
