Carrick-on-Shannon nestles on a beautiful stretch of the Shannon and is gateway to the Shannon-Erne Waterway. It is the principal town of County Leitrim , from where 41 lakes are within a 6-mile radius. There are many historic buildings including the ruins of Carrickdrumruske Castle which was a strategic outpost on the Shannon Crossing in 1603. Carrick-on-Shannon was once a major depot for river trade; timber, cement, hardware, and especially Guinness stout were all transported here from Dublin, Athlone and Limerick . Nowadays the town is full of fine restaurants, bars and shops and is a lovely place to visit.
Roosky is an ideal touring location, midway between Dublin and Donegal with either place near enough to take in on a day trip. The picturesque village is an important boating harbour on the River Shannon with a busy marina. Amenities in the area include golf, tennis, horse riding, pony trekking, and angling. The village is a noted River Shannon coarse angling centre with big stocks of bream, roach, rudd and hybrids. Roosky Festival takes place in July with workshops and entertainment featuring traditional and popular music.

Mysterious monuments in stone dotted on the landscape serve as evidence of an ancient history in these parts and add to the fascination of the area.
