Ballinasloe ,
Co. Galway has a population of approximately 6,000. The town
is famous for the great October Fair, attended by nearly 80,000
over a four day event. This fair has been conducted under Letters
of Patent since the early 18th century and is steeped in tradition
and history.
The Ballinasloe Fair is one of Europe's oldest Horse Fairs,
held in the showgrounds of Ballinasloe town on the first week
of October each year. The selection of the Queen of the Fair,
on the eve of festival celebration, is one of the best nights
out you could have in Ireland and is well worth a visit. There
is a wide variety of sporting interests catered for with numerous
sports clubs established in the town.
Tarmonbarry ,
(Sanctuary of Barry in Gaelic - also spelled Termonberry) is 5 miles from the picturesque
town of Longford
on the County Roscommon Borders. One of the historical remains
on the borders of the town well worth visiting is the Kilbarry
Monastery dating back from the 6th Century and part of the remains
of this once imposing building are still visible. Also the National
Famine Museum in Strokestown
about 7 miles away from Tarmonbarry offers a valuable insight
into the historical past of Ireland and is a reminder of our
heritage. Although quite a small area Tarmonbarry is well worth
a visit especially in August of each year when there is a local
festival featuring all kinds of both sporting and leisure entertainments.
Lanesborough
is situated at the Northern tip of Lough Ree. The town name
originates from George Lane, who took part in the fierce battle
of Kinsale in 1601 and was rewarded with a vast amount of land
in the Shannon area. Lanesborough Town is linked by a bridge
to its sister village Ballyleague in County Roscommon. Within
a couple of minutes walk from the Shannon in Lanesboro you will
find supermarkets, newsagents, tourist office, pubs, restaurants,
a pitch & putt course and tennis courts. Lanesborough is renowned
for excellent course fishing bream, tench, roach, pike, perch
