Ireland has a
fantastic canal network which was used to transport all manner
of goods in the past. Nowadays our picturesque Canals afford
the visitor wonderful opportunities to discover some of the
Real Ireland.
Away from the bustle of our Cities and Towns you can relax
at a sedate pace on one of our Canal Boats and see more of
what Rural Ireland has to offer.
There are two
main canals in Ireland
The Grand canal extends from Dublin across the vast central
boglands to link with the mighty Shannon at Shannon harbour
. A junction at Lowtown provides a link to the Barrow navigation
along the Grand canal's Barrowline.
|
| This old canal with
elegant bridges and beautiful locks is a joy to cruise. The
mixture of bogland and farmland along its banks harbour wild
fowl and wild flowers in equal profusionIn the total
peaceful silence of the remote central boglands the fast pace
of modern civilisation soon fades into oblivion. Encompassed
by nature, you soon feel the rejuvenated by this relaxing cruise.
In the evening a friendly smile and cheery wave welcomes you
to one of the many quiet villages and towns along its banks.
Here you can replenish your larder, quench your thirst and enjoy
the traditional entertainment in one of the many pubs. |

The Barrow Valley
is a nature wonderland where unspoilt banks, open fields and
leafy oak woodlands attract a wide variety of wildlife. Here
you will find heron, mallard, mute swan and moorhens sharing
the riverside with badgers, foxes, rabbits and hedgehogs.
A flash of saphire over the water, betrays the presence of
the gaily coloured kingfisher, dipping and gliding above the
surface. Around every bend lies some as yet undiscovered treasure.
Enjoy a glimpse of nature at its richest, unspoilt and free
from the influence of modern living.
The beautiful
Barrow waters provide a haven for both the novice and experienced
angler. Game anglers will find good trout and salmon fishing,
while their course fishing friends will enjoy excellent bream,
tench, rudd and pike fishing throughout the season. Permits
are required to fish for salmon and trout. These are available
from the local angling clubs and fishing tackle shops.
