The Aran Islands - scattered across the mouth of Galway Bay,
sheltering the mainland from the forces of the wild Atlantic
sea !! Each of the three islands it comprises are uniquely beautiful
and have plenty to offer the adventurous visitor.
Steeped in history dating back to the Bronze age the islands
have walks, cycles and hidden trails to discover, not to mention
some great pubs, ceilis and craic to enjoy. You may tour the
main island, InisMór by minibus, pony and trap or even
hire a bicycle. |
The
fabulous fleet at Aran Island ferries enables passengers to
travel in luxury for the short crossing. The pride of the fleet
is the recently launched "Draiocht na Farraige" or
"Magic of the Sea". An impressive, state of the art
37.4 metre, 272 passenger boat complete with indoor and outdoor
seating and snack bar.
Aran Island Ferries will transport you from Galway city to their
ferry for the 40 minute crossing to the Islands. You may explore
any one island in a day or stay for longer and explore them
all!! |

The most famous site on Inis mór is Dun Aonghus, a
huge stone fortress covering almost 11 acres, on the western
edge of the island. The fortress dates from about 1000B.C.
and is perched dramatically on the edge of a sheer 300 ft
cliff that falls away into the Atlantic Ocean. Apparently
added to over the centuries, the fort consists of a band of
stones known as "cheveaux de frise" and is an amazing structure.
